We have a couple of pre-existing issues logged against this specific error message.

Can you confirm:
A user profile is actually created for the user when this error is generated? 
Also, did you previously customize the user profile, delete any properties and/or re-order any user profile properties? DNN-9929 
What case sensitivity is your SQL Server set to use? DNN-13145

No... After upgrading to 5.5 from 5.4.4 things are relativly smooth... site seems generally better than before.

A user profile is definately created... after clicking submit... the user is created and the site does not go anywhere or notify the user of the account being created. Most users then immediately try to refresh the page due to the long wait time.... or tend to re-register... this is when they are presented with the error that the user was already created.

Nothing has been added, changed or deleted in the profile properties of any users.

Our SQL server is set to case-insensitive.

Hopefully a fix can be found if there are others with this issue... Look forward to a response. Thanks again for the help to all of you.
