I know this is probably very simple, but I just can't find it - how do I let users log in using their email address instead of username?
do I have to use a custom login page with a 3rd party module?

users may use any username including their email address, but will provide it again in "email" address field.

I am not 100% sure, but think it is on the AspNetSqlMemberShipProvider in your web.config file where you have to enable it.

thanks. I know that NEW users can create their profile with an email address as the "Username" - which is what I think you are saying? My question is how existing users can log in using their email address INSTEAD of their username...?   And when I add an instance of the "account login" Module to a page (in dnn4.9.5) it is simply an empty box with no content...?
thanks, I appreciate all assistance.
