Hello All:
I am at lost on this.  I have installed the base DNN, it is working fine. I thought I start exercising the power of it and creating a new parent portal under the same instance.  some info on my setup....
running the latest DNN,  IIS is version is 6.0. .net is version 3.5 SP1.  My installation of DNN is under inetpub outside wwwroot.  from wwroot respected websites I have a virtual directory to DNN which is under inetpub.   I have configured my initial portal /0, under ISS Home Directory Tab I have it to redirect to a URL "/dnn" with the option of  "A directory below URL entered" checked.  So with this config web users will input http://www.mydomian.com and it will get translate to http://www.mydomain.com/dnn and my initial portal will comes up.

With that said I have registered another domain to the right IP, tested this under IIS only and it works but when I create a parent portal /3 under DNN i can't get this to work.  I am having the Alias in DNN as www.mysecondomain.org and am having the redirect under IIS to point to /DNN directory.  but it doesn't work. I keep getting errors.

Any idea's or recommendations.......

Ardy

can you explain why you are running DNN in a virtual directory? That will only multiply the difficulty level of your setup by a huge factor

alternative suggested setup:

  • create a new website in IIS, point it to the location you installed DNN
  • make sure website has a correct hostheader
  • for every new parentportal, ad a new hostheader to the same website

now, your users will not be redirected to www.domain.com/dnn, but will stay on www.domain.com when they visit your site

Erik:
Thanks for Reply.....
The reason I installed DNN outside wwwroot and under inetpub is becuse most readings I have done in regards to installation seem to point out that this is a more secure way of installing DNN.

I finally got it working last night by redirecting to /dnn,  But your instaruction is much easiear and more strait forward.  I have a question.......what are the steps in creating either new or parent or child,  my undrestanding is as below please correct me if I am wrong.

Creating new Parent

  1. Register domain
  2. Make/Modify appropriate DNS entery to point into correct IP/Webserver
  3. IIS - Cretae web folder and point into root directory of installed DNN instance
  4. IIS - Make sure Host header value is pointing to the same DNS URL entery i.e www.mysite.com
  5. IIS - make sure the asp.net is pointing to latest ASP.Net version
  6. DNN - login as Host
  7. DNN - create new portal - Make sure the Alias value is same as the DNS entery and same as IIS header value

Creating new child.....
I haven't done one yet but am assuming is the same excluding Domain register, DNS entery and IIS host headder value....

IThank you for your help........

Ardy, please be aware, that using a folder outside wwwroot does not mean using a virtual directory. usually you create a folder, e.g. in Inetpub and a website in IIS pointing to it. Install DNN in the root of this folder, not a subdirectory. Your steps are correct, you specify ASP.Net version in IIS App pool used. Once you called your web site with a fresh new install, the installer will automatically create a proper portal alias for you, i.e. you only need to add aliases, if you need different access urls (and for additional portals).
