I have just created a new parent portal. I want the new portal to be configured to except unique email address only. When I try to do so it tells me I need admin rights or to change the web.config file. I have admin rights. What do I need to change in the web.config for this to work correctly?

Thanks

Just a quick scan of one of my web.config files showed this section, which I *assume* would be where you need to make the change to the "requiresUniqueEmail" attribute to "True"

<add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" enablePasswordRetrieval="true" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false" minRequiredPasswordLength="7" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0" requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Encrypted" applicationName="DotNetNuke" description="Stores and retrieves membership data from the local Microsoft SQL Server database" />

However, if you only have Admin rights (as opposed to the SuperUser "host" account), I don't know if you want to / can edit your web.config file... if you're not sure what you're doing, you can really mess up the install... so make sure you make backups before you change things (full site local files + database to be safe).

Thanks that worked.

I do have another question. The registration requires that a user create a "User Name" and a "Display Name". The feedback I get from registers is that this is very confusing to new registers of my site. I would prefer they use either or and not have to input both.

I get the same complaint, especially on sites I maintain that are for an older audience (retirement communities, particularly). If you're looking to modify what info is collected, go to your Admin > Users page, then from the drop-down choose "Manage Profile Properties", then use the grid provided to select which into if required / visible / etc.  If you are adding fields and want people who are already registered to fill out the new info, save the Profile Properties, go back to the Users page and choose "User Settings" from the drop-down, then towards the bottom, select "require a valid profile for Registration" and "... for login"  this should have the effect of prompting existing users to fill out the new info when they login next.

Hope that helps!
