I seemingly successfully upgraded a 5.6.0 site to 5.6.1 - however upon logging into the site I cannot get any of the module menu's to drop down in the upper left corner (the blue arrow)

I get a spinning wheel. I did notice that as soon as I do this in IE the Page Error in the status bar comes up and I get this error:

Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; InfoPath.2; OfficeLiveConnector.1.4; OfficeLivePatch.1.3; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E; BO1IE8_v1;ENUS)

Message: Sys.ArgumentException: Cannot deserialize empty string.
Parameter name: data
Line: 5
Char: 50445

Any thoughts on why this is happening.. one a side note... my login link at the bottom of the page does not work now either... It will just reload the page instead of going to the login screen.

Thanks for any insight.

If you are able to login as host user, go to Host-->Host Settings and expand the Advanced Settings then Performance Settings. If the Compression Setting drop-down list is set to "GZip Compression", change it back to "No Compression". There is an issue already entered in the Gemini issue tracker (http://support.dotnetnuke.com) regarding this issue that seems to affect more than just the module action menus.

That seemed to have fixed the issue - it was set to Deflate Compression though.. not GZIP. I set it back to No compression - that seemed to work.

Thanks for posting the fix - just had the same problem. Does compression really make any difference in the performance of a DNN web site? Thanks, William

another option might be using advanced module action menu from dnnmenuactions.codeplex.com
