I have upgraded most all of my sites to DNN 5.6.1 and have noticed that almost every time I do a module install or upgrade the result is an Out of Memory Exception errors. At that point I can't get the error to go away without resetting IIS. I have tried to stop and restart the website in IIS and tried to recycle app pools in IIS but the memory error just keeps coming up until I do iisreset from a command prompt.

Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.

Is anyone else experiencing any similar issues?

how much memory do you have? Which ASP.Net version and App Pool Type (integrated or classic) are you running?

Leupold, thanks for the reply. I have 4GB of memory and .NET 3.5. I am on IIS 6. Not sure about the app pool type. How can I tell or is that only for IIS 7?

The weird thing is that I have had issues infrequently over the years where a DNN module might go out of control and consume all memory until it crashed with Out of Memory error. But in that case I could actually see the memory being consumed in Task Manager. Now I don't see any abnormal memory escalation in task manager.

A typical scenario that has happened across several websites is this. I install or upgrade a module and not the same module across sites. Once the module installs I can hit the Return link at the bottom and after a short time the OOM exception occurs. Again, not seeing any abnormalities in Task Manager and no other sites are affected. But I cannot get it to recover the site until I do an IISReset from command prompt.

Hopefully this information will help.

Hey cliff,

How many separate DNN websites are you running on this server, and by chance are you also running MS SQL on the same server.

In your IIS manager there are two parts to each web server,  the application pool area and the web sites area.  Every web site you configure has to be associated with an application pool.  The application pool is an area of memory for the want of a better word, where the asp.net application controlling each dnn website runs.

Each application pool can be allocated a fix amount of memory space - this is defined on a pool by pool basis.  If you dnn site is using more space than is allocated to its application pool then you will possibly start to receive these errors.

Note this does not mean that your module is running out of control - but just that it is consuming more space than is allocated for its use.
Also, depending on how your site is configured, other things such as your cache settings and even the size of your event log can contribute to the amount of resources being consumed by your application.
