Hi,
First of all, I would suggest you to keep the email field which is the main data which allows you to garanty contact with users.
You also could remove the username field and use the email field to connect on your website. We provide the SimpleSignin module which will allow you to do that.

Regarding URL you mentionned, it's "system URL" because DNN identify the param "ctl" with value "Register" and it loads the register form on any page you are.
You could configure DNN with specific register page by creating a page, put the "users & roles" module on it or a 3rd part module like ours, and configure site settings to use the specific page you've created (by menu "Admin - Site Settings").
