Hello Everyone,

Just wondering the exact or preferred method of moving a DNN installation to a new server would be. As of right now I have my DNN site finished and working on a virtual machine server. The SQL database is also hosted on the same virtual machine. Now the boss at work wants the website to run off the physical web server that is currently hosting the current website and has asked me to move mine over.

This is where I get confused.

To make sure my site still works I would need to directly copy the entire DNN directory. Then edit the web.config file to have it point to the new SQL database, correct?

And to move the SQL database, I should be able to just back up and restore it to the new server and wouldn't have any issues as long as I change the web.config file, correct?

And lastly all my internal hyperlinks will need to be changed to point to the new location as well wouldn't they?

Thanks for the clarification,
Dean

Assuming you are using a different domain name for development server - dev.mysite.com or whatever to your LIVE server domain mysite.com

Log onto DNN as ADMIN
Open Admin Settings and locate the Portal Alias section
You need to ADD a Portal Alias for mysite.com in addition to the dev.mysite.com development alias
- if not when you try to access the portal on the new server there may be issues.

Backup DNN File System
Backup Database

Take Live Server offline
Restore DNN File System to new SERVER
Restore DNN Database to new SERVER
Edit web.config to point to new Database Location

With regard to URL's - ideally when setting up a site you should always create internal URL's that are RELATIVE to the site not EXPLICIT.  In other words - URLS that are stored as href="/home.aspx"  as opposed to href="http://dev.mysite.com/home.aspx" -  if you have created your urls using the tools built into DNN's html editor then as a rule the hrefs should be in the relative form already.

So create the alias before I do the move. Thanks much, and my links are not relative. Was having trouble with the relative linking for whatever reason and wasn't thinking too much about it at the time.
