I have set up a new page on our site so that it will appear in a drop down menu and using the "Link Url" option in advance settings selected a file on our site  to redirect the page to.

Has anyone been able to use Google Analytics to track how often this file is accessed? Normally when I link to a pdf w/in a text module I use event tracking, but not sure how I can track this pdf's performance while also having it appear in our menu.

Thanks for any advice.

We are using the Google Analytics Events widget from the Widget Suite to do this on our own site.

As you know, but others may not, this allows us to track and categorize activity and traffic, then report on it from Google Analytics.  Here's an example of us monitoring how many people download from the Widget Suite site.

By the way, here's an example of how we are using that widget in the skin of that site:

<object id="wgtDownloadTracker1" codetype="dotnetnuke/client" codebase="WillStrohl.Widgets.GoogleAnalyticsEvents" declare="declare">
    <param name="event" value="click" />
    <param name="selector" value="a[href^='http://dnnwidgets.codeplex.com/releases']" />
    <param name="category" value="Download" />
    <param name="action" value="Click" />
    <param name="label" value="01.03.02" />
    <param name="debug" value="false" />
</object>

This may be a super obvious question...but, if I want to track a pdf being downloaded from a drop down menu...would I need to add the widget to every skin on the site? Thanks!

In your case, I would use the widget in a similar manner.  You'd simply need to use a web page inspector that like what's build in to Chrome (<Ctrl><Shift>+<I>) and Internet Explorer (<F12>), or the Firebug add-on for FireFox.  Use your tool of choice to inspect the menu item.  Try to find a unique ID, CSS class, or another HTML attribute to use as a selector for the widget.

This would allow you to add the appropriate selector in your menu to use in the widget - effectively tracking the click event for that menu item.
