I am a starter in DNN.....still I have not able to grasp the total concept of this.....I need to work on projects developed in DNN 3.x and also DNN 4.x. I have a few queries related to this.....I can see that 3.x and 4.x have a lot of changes in terms of configuring and preparation of the portal.

1) Is it possible to install both versions at the same time.....if so, then how will we select the version of DNN when we start a DNN project.?  How can we identify each version  in the computer (find out if both versions are installed) ??

(For example, when we select "New Website" in VS 2005, "DotNetNuke Framework" appears in the template section...which I think is for DNN 4.x....what do we do if we want to develop in DNN 3.x ?)

2) I think we don't have much documentations available for DNN 4.x, (the documents available in dotnetnuke.com are the same as that of 3.x), just I found a module creation in adefwebserver site..... Is it possible to master 4.x at the moment. From where can I get the proper documentation for this..?   Do I need to study the "DNN 3.0 Module Developer's Guide" (how to build the project) before going into DNN 4.x ???

If so, I would like to proper documents for studying each version .......

3) Currently, I am supposed to work on a project half done on DNN 4.0.3. I was going through the Professional Dotnetnuke ASP.NET Portals (for DNN 3.0)(Shaun Walker & et.al, Wrox)....but I found that the module creation steps are different for the DNN 4.x. Is that my assumptions or findings wrong?

Since I need to start the project urgently, I am writing this mail trying to find out if there are any other sources available.............

Please help me answering my queries......would be most grateful if anyone can guide to get a startup...

Yes, both versions can be installed on a computer at the same time. They would be completely separate, and would have different localhost URLs in IIS. DNN version 3.x uses ASP.NET version 1.1 and DNN v4 uses ASP.NET version 2.
The dotNetNuke template in VS 2005 is for DNN version 4. You don't need Visual Studio to install DNN, but to develop custom modules you need Visual Studio 2003 for DNN v3 and you would use Visual Studio 2005 for DNN version 4.
The project documentation is still based on DNN v3, but in addition to adefwebserver, Shawn has written a step-by-step tutorial located over on the ASP.NET forum.
