Trying to find out if you can have a unique domain name set up as a child portal i.e. if the portal domain was www.pants.com can I some how set up www.shoes.com and www.socks.com as children and not www.pants.com/shoes etc? I need to allow folks to manage various childern sites within a portal but they need to have unique domain rights. Is this possible? I have lots and lots of these that I need to set up.

The difference between a parent and child portal in dnn is basically that parent portals have their own domain name.
So in this case what you would be doing is setting up parent portals for each domain - all hosted on the the same dnn hosting.

Yes, I have several child portals to which I allocated domain names and, as Westa said, effectively converted them to parent protals.

You state you have lots of these to set up, so just be aware that, whilst hosting plans usually include for unlimited child portals, there may well be limits on the number of parent portals, so you may need to review/upgrade your current hosting plan.

Like Wes Tatters explained above, this can be done through parent portal only, that's how dnn works. if you hosting has limitation about it, you may consider to change host.
