I have no problems with enabling SSL on a site which has its own domain cert, however it is a much different story with shared SSL.

I have set the SSL URL and the STANDARD URL, as well as checked both SSL ENABLED and SSL ENFORCED. I then set the login page to use Secure? (checked in tab settings). However I get this error when trying to access the page:

The resource cannot be found.

Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

Has anyone out there had any success with implementing shared SSL? (I am currently using v5.6.3)

Well I now see the problem. The code that's doing the redirect to a specified secure page is adding www onto the SSL URL that I specified in the SSL SETTINGS section.

Of course this is going to break and not render because the shared SSL URL that I am using does not have www defined nor can it use it like that unless a lot of manipulation is done in IIS.

Surely there has to be a way to get around this - hasn't anyone else come up against this?

Heck - it gets even better! It seems that all of the HOST pages are secured by default so even they are not accessible if using a shared ssl url that doesn't use www.

This is messed up even more than I had thought. The redirect works as long as the site uses https://sharedSSLurl.com instead of https://www.sharedSSLurl.com (if you have a shared SSL URL that doesn't utilize www as I have).

However I just discovered that if one is logged in while this redirection occurs, the secured page goes into non-admin mode! All of the admin tools are completely gone as if you are logged out. But if you navigate to an unsecured page all of the tools are available again. If you try to access any of the HOST pages, it displays the control panel at the top but the content area contains the login pane!

This DNN blog posted back in 2007 by Alec Whittington sums it up best about the Shared SSL feature:

Ultimately the solution is for the user to purchase their own SSL certificate and use that, which the majority of businesses do. As stated above, it is better than what was before it, but it is not without issue.

This was 4 years and 1.5 versions ago! The Shared SSL URL feature should be removed if it's not going to work AND if it's not going to get fixed.
