The problem is that the Add Portal process is not creating a Portal Alias, although I have entered a value in the field. New portals are created and added to the list of portals, but without an alias, they cannot be edited (apparently) and just throw a SQL database error (no reference to object or whatever that text is).

If I enter a Portal Alias such webservername\webname.domain, I get a much shorter error that says "no spaces or punctuation in portal alias". What is the correct format to enter a portal alias?

Parent portals should be a domain name

www.myname.com
subdomain.myname.com

child portals should be

www.myname.com/CHILD
myname.com/child

etc

I tried as both a parent and a child domain, but the error persists:
The Portal Alias Must Not Contain Spaces Or Punctuation.
There is both a backslash and a period in the name, so this message seems to be an error itself.
