Whenever a user tried to register I get the below error in the event log.  I'm using gmail as my SMTP server and test emails send just fine.  What am I doing wrong?

obviously the SMTP server settings in DNN Host Settings are not appropriate. please review settings and test it using the test button as well as sending a test mail to an external address from Admin > Newsletter (or register using a test account)

GMail requires that the outging (SMTP) mail server be setup (in Host -->Host Settings) as follows:

SMTP Server or Host: smtp.gmail.com:587
SMTP Authentication: Basic
Enable SSL: Checked
SMTP Username and Password: as provided by GMail.

Note in particular that port 587 is appended to the SMTP Server, separated by a colon and that Enable SSL is checked.

For more information, see the GMail help pages discussing on how to set up to use Gmail in thrid-party clients.

Also check that the email address for the administrator user specified in Admin --> Site Settings has been properly set and that it is in the same domain (gmail.com).
