I've got a user who is going to manage two separate sites on the same server. I've configured him with an account on one portal, but receive an error when I try to configure an account on the second portal saying the account already exists. I could understand this if the portals could share accounts but they can't (without an extra paid-for module).

So DNN isn't permitting the same account name on multiple portals but won't allow me to share accounts. Is there a way around this (without paying extra)?

Edit: I've just read about the Professional edition feature we have which can use configured site groups.

There is a potential work around, but I haven't tested this out myself in quite a while.

If the user goes to Site #2 (assuming already registered on Site #1) and tries to register with exactly the same Username and Password as they used on Site #1, DNN will link the two accounts.

This isn't a well known feature, and perhaps isn't a supported feature, but it was something that has worked in DNN since version 4.4 (I haven't tested lately, especially since we added the site groups functionality in PE)

Tried to use this undocumented feature...??    ;-)

When creating the child site host user this did link the host account user to the parent site host user (same username & email).

However when trying to create a child user that was an admin user on the parent site got the following error:

A User Already Exists For the Username Specified. Please Register Again Using A Different Username.

I got the same error when trying to create a regular (non-admin) account on the child site that already existed on the parent site.

Apparently the child site can see the parent site users but can not use them. Since I am using Community edition not PE I am out of luck as I don't have access to group site capability which causes a problem as each user will require a different username and password for the parent and child sites.

Can either a workaround be found or in the next update add the group sites functionality to the Community edition please.

Thanks in advance

PatM,
I've always been able to do this is CE. You have to create the account from the Portal's menus (I haven't been able to get it to work when creating the admin account for a new portal.)
Make sure the Username AND Password are identical.

This worked great after I made sure the all required profile fields were populated in the parent site user account (a requirement I found out).

Thanks for your help.
