Hello All,

I customarily create a CNAME (www) for mysite.com when I create a new website.  Then I add that to the host header in IIS and set it as the alias in DNN, i.e., www.mysite.com

I also then add the raw mysite.com as a second host header and also add a second alias for mysite.com in DNN, all without the www.

It is not really a DNN question, but I hope you do not mind me asking here - how should I handle this?

From an SEO and general good practice, should I just do a re-direct on the raw mysite.com to www.mysite.com.  If I do a re-direct, should I try to handle that with my Domain registrar or handle it myself in IIS ?  I think the way I do it is not correct, because I end up with two sets of URLs floating around.

Thanks for your advice,

Mark

You're right you want to use just the www, not without. Your site should respond to one URL and any others should redirect to the main. You can handle it within DotNetNuke, just go to the site settings, advanced settings, and site aliases. There you can see to configure a default alias and then specify redirect to the default, in your case www.

Another thing I do in IIS, is set up a redirect site, so it intercepts all requests to port 80, and then does a 301 redirect to my DNN site. I have some old sites that I pulled and I want the traffic to go to my main site, so this handles it perfectly.

I typically do this on my sites using the friendlyurl provider from Ifinity (www.ifinity.com.au), it has an option there you can define the default alias for a Portal, and it will 301 redirect all other requests to that default alias, that way you can basically tell the search engines which format of the URL they should be using.
