What is necessary at the OS level to enable sending of eMail through SendMail? I have two servers, both running Windows Server 2008 R2. I copied the database and the web files from "server A" to "server B", so the DNN configuration is identical. Both refer to 127.0.0.1 for the SMTP Server / Port value and send using Anonymous SMTP authentication.

I can send mail using the Test option (under SMTP Server Settings) on Server A but it fails on Server B, with the following message.

"There is a problem with the configuration of your SMTP Server. Mail was not sent."

As I say, these are identical copies at the DNN level (database and files). I also see the "SMTP eMail" configuration under IIS but these are again identical on both servers. So, I'm assuming I need to configure something at the OS level.

Any pointers?

Thanks.

Mark

You need to install an SMTP server on Server B, there are some options in Windows, but a lot of people use an external SMTP server as they tend to have more features and security options available.

Thanks Chris. This is a tad embarrassing but I'll be darned if I can recall installing an SMTP server on Server A. My domain does have an SMTP service but it's hosted (Office 365) and I don't do anything specific to point to it - but it seems to work :) The only difference between Servers A and B is that Server is a member of my domain (*.com), whereas I am using localhost for all access on Server B.

So, I either have an SMTP server installed which I don't know about (yikes!) or eMail is automatically finding its way to the hosted SMTP server.

Thanks.

Mark

See if you have an internal mail system that allows relaying and use that instead of anything locally to avoid this.

If you have access to RDP into the servers, look at Server A to see if it has a local SMTP server running (it must if it works)

As Mark suggests, using another mail server (pointing the SMTP Settings to that) is preferable
