I admit this is a rather subjective comment but I'd be interested in comments.

I have noticed a significant slow down in the number of books associated with DNN. I know about all the books from previous versions and have previously noticed them in bookstores. But when I walk into Barnes and Noble now I NEVER see any DotNetNuke books. I see tons of books on the likes of Drupal, etc, but where there used to be at least some DotNetNuke books - well, now there's a metaphorical gap on the shelf (the gap is filled by even more Drupal books :)).

For good or bad, seeing a book on a particular technology or platform a) helps garner interest from the occasional "book browser" who might just pick up a book and start researching more and b) lends some credibility to the technology.

Given some recent hiccups with DNN documentation (even DNN employees have asked me to document my request for effective API documentation, for example), I must admit that seeing book after book on Drupal has started to intrigue me - and those books are alphabetically right next to where the DotNetNuke books could be :) DotNetNuke is now completely invisible in the book stores I visit and that's been the case for at least a year.

I have two questions...

  • I am curious to know whether anyone at DNN sees facilitating a "conveyor belt" of up-to-date books as a priority at all
  • Are there any DNN books on the way?

As I say, just curious.

Just to put a bit more flesh on this, here are a couple of links (I hope the URLs "travel well" - they are intended to list books by publication date).

Drupal Books - tons of recent publications and a bunch that are available for pre-order. A very quick scan suggests about 30 or so books this year alone. A real sense of an active platform.

By comparison, here's the same query for DotNetNuke. Not very compelling (most recent book is approaching two long years ago and nothing coming up).

This is just one small measure - but I find it a mildly worrying sign.

Thanks.

Hi Mark,

I asked about this at DnnWorld and the answer I received is that there are none in the pipeline at the moment.

A book on DNN7 would be well received in my opinion though.

Thank you, Scott. That's disappointing to hear.

Looking back it's kind of ironic... I remember that a consultant suggested I take a look at DNN a few years ago. I hadn't heard of it at all but, coincidentally, that next weekend I was in a bookstore, saw a DNN book and in the context of the earlier discussion it caught my eye. I ended up moving to DNN and I'd say that book was the catalyst for that.

I'm guessing the folks at DNN just prioritize it pretty low which would be regretful. It's insightful to me that (as far as I know) with all the changes in DNN 6.x not one single book was released.

I work at a rather large company (that all of you will have heard of :)) and we have a huge library, with access to physical books and eBooks. I understand that it takes a pretty penny to get a physical book out the door but publishing eBooks reduces that cost. Our library has not one DNN eBook published in the last year / 18 months.

Anyway, I said my piece and I hope that the powers-that-be might consider a push for more publications.

Thanks.

Mark
