Hi there,

I was alerted by our hosting provider yesterday that we had run out of space on our server. Looking into the problem I discovered that our DNN DB was suddenly 15GB's in size.

Doing a backup of the DB results in a 289MB DB backup so my question is why is the DB itself taking up so much space?

I ran a query of the table file sizes and the biggest table was only 45MB. I truncated the eventlog and also performed a shrink on the DB file but neither helped. I then did a new backup and restore but still the DB is 15GB (including trying a backup with "recovery model" set to simple).

I did come across some posts about there being an issue with the "SearchItemWordPosition" table but my table is only 2.5MB (This issue seemed to relate to DNN 5.1 and we're running a newer version).

We're running the following setup:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 - SP 1 (all recent updates installed)
  • MS SQL Server 2008
  • DotNetNuke Community Edition 05.05.01 (22)

We have a development server running the same as above and that DB is only 849 MB.

Any ideas how we resolve this issue?

Thanks,
Donovan

Have you truncated the logs for the DB lately?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback. The issue was very easily resolved by the following steps:

  • Take the site offline (using the "app_offline.htm" file in your DNN root) to free it from any SQL connections
  • Right clicking on your DB in SQL Management Studio
  • Select "Tasks"
  • Click on "Shrink --> Database"
  • Under "Shrink Action" check the box which reads "Reorganize files before releasing unused space."
  • Click OK

Always remeber to backup your DB before trying anything like this. Hope this helps someone else.

Our DB went from 15.5GB to 240MB ;-)

Cheers,
Donovan
