So how do we have this escalated - it appears to be an issue introduced in DNN 7.1.1 and is very High Priority I would imagine?

unfortunately, as long as the module is part of the core, it is hard to get anyone from the community stepping up to improve the module.
I will try to check out source code as soon as I get some time.

Hmm - I forgot this was opensource ;) I tried to have a go at finding the problem but I can't find the source for the Journal Module. I downloaded the Source for DNN 7.1.0 (This is the last time the Journal module changed since it broke my 7.0.5 build) - but it was just the install version of the module.I can't find the module source on CodePlex and the DNNForge is down - where is it?

Update - I think this is it - https://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/Sourc...

Hmm - looking at the changeset, this could be the changed that caused this:

Who is this person? Maybe they could comment on this change?
