Advice needed.

How many portals can be safely installed on a single DNN Installation and Database.
A bit ambigious I know, but we have approx 15-20 small comunity organisation websites running on our old staging server CMS.

We are going to migrate all accross to DNN and although they are individual sites they all share a common layout and look.

I would like to know that DNN could handle that amount of sites on a single installation in advance

Any advice as to approach is welcome, for example would I create each as a parent or child portal. We are quite new to DNN so this is a new venture for us.

Hi Stuart

DNN can absolutely handle what you're asking it to do and very well.

We've got one site with about 150 child portals for a club and it's working well, all with a similar theme, but some original montages to reflect their local environment.

I made sure each had their own sub domain / parent install and they are branch.domain.org format, although having said that we've created for another client several child portals with their language as being their domain name in a child portal instance, eg.. domain.org/en  domain.org/fr  - it works well too, so if you think it's going to be easier for the customer to remember.  However, if you go down that path you can't have pages within the website called what the child portals are - if you get my drift.

Using child portal instances also puts a folder into the root directory of the portal name, which I prefer not to have, but that's just my personal preference.

So yes, the good news is that you can have hundreds of child portals in a dnn instance, and the main consideration performance wise is what's going to be on each of the child portals, and if they require membership access. I have found that the most overhead with DNN is the amount of members and administrators logged in making changes to the site.

If I was going to have some simple brochure sites with a bit of information about the business, with the occasional updates, maybe some automated rss feeds, like we're using, you could have in the hundreds without issue.

Hope this helps.

Nina

Many thanks Nina.

That has put my mind at rest,  we will also use the parent portal approach.

Just a thought.

Bearing in mind that the server is a public facing one and the sites we have to migrate are currently using the domain names what is the best way to set up a dev portal so we can work upon it then transfer domain name later.

There are a few ways - I suggest that you have a dev url for them, perhaps lock down with access only via specific IP addresses, or hide the pages from being public until launched.  The links are dynamic if linked using the html editor and when the live site is turned on, the links will automatically work.

This has always been a feature of DNN and if you follow the dynamic nature you can always reuse the site. I've got ideas on how this could work well for you but I'd need alot more time than I have now to go through the steps.

Does this help you a little more?

Nina
