DNN 7.1.1 I have Auto Sync checked on, but I FTPed a file to the server over a week ago and when I logged into day it was not available in the editors Document manager.  

I would sync the files using the file manager, but it does not work at all - see my previous posts on the 14 page post where that is described in detail.

I've not seen that (but I never use auto-sync on my sites) - Have you tried setting log4net to All to see if any exceptions are recorded? Also, can you point me in the direction of any jira issue raised for these so I can look into them further.

There used to be issues with the file manager not working properly with some legacy skins - the fix back then was to make sure that the skin contained a definition for <dnn:CONTROLPANEL runat="server" id="cp"  IsDockable="True" />

one suggestion is to upgrade to 7.2.0 as the filemanager has now been replaced - though perhaps just test in dev first as there are quite a few changes.

I've found that the auto-sync hasn't worked since about v5.
