I have a customer who wants a major website makeover. It's gonna take a while to get the upgrade done so I am creating a test site based on their current site and then do a DNN 7 upgrade and put in a new skin and let them update their content. Then I will migrate the test site back over to their main site folder.

I use Website Panel for my control panel and my root domain is forerunner.ws. The control panel lets me create subdomains for testing. So in the control I panel did the following.

  • Created a new test domain as ses.forerunner.ws
  • Created a new website based on the domain ses.forerunner.ws - all this does is create the folder structure on the server
  • Created a new db named test
  • Restored db from .bak file
  • Added ses.forerunner.ws and www.ses.forerunner.ws to the portal alias table of my test db and removed the other aliases
  • Copied backup files to the new website folder
  • Checked security settings for folder files
  • Changed web.config to point to sestest db
  • Updated the hosturl in hostsettings table and the defaultportalalias in the portal settings table

When I try to hit ses.forerunner.ws it auto redirects back to their live website at www.sescorp.org. I can access ses.forerunner.ws/test.gif and I see the correct site.

What else could be causing it to redirect? I changed the PortalAliasMapping from REDIRECT to NONE and that had no impact. I have triple checked that I updated the right test db and the web config correctly. I don't have any URL tool like URL Master running. I turned on Fiddler and hit the ses.forerunner.ws and it only shows www.sescorp.org. I have checked IIS and the headers are correct and can't find anything else to check. I also took a real test domain I own and pointed it at the site and going to it still redirects. Hopefully this is something simple that I just overlooked. Any ideas would be appreciated.

there might be a Domain address specified in web.config. otherwise you might Need to use fiddler or browser developer Tools to capture the communication between browser and Server and trace Redirects.

I used Fiddler yesterday and it didn't show anything that I could find. Today I used Chrome to see what is going on and it is definitely a 301 redirect. Here is what I see.

  1. Remote Address:
    198.55.240.114:80
  2. Request URL:
    http://ses.forerunner.ws/
  3. Request Method:
    GET
  4. Status Code:
    301 Moved Permanently (from cache)

But I have not idea where the redirect is coming from. I checked the web.config, siteurls.config and all the other .config files I could find and don't see anything about a redirect. Is there some other setting possible in the db where this could be set? I looked in IIS and there is nothing in the HTTP Redirect setting. I looked in Google Analytics and don't even have an account for this site. I created this site a few years ago and just don't remember doing anything abnormal, but I am getting a little old now.
