We applied security patches to our Webserver and Database server last night.  All our sites came back online when both the webserver and the Database server came back online except out two DNN sites.  They were showing a 500 error until we did a IIS restart.  Search around in this community I found  a suggestion that the webserver probable came back on line before the Database came back.  So why would this continue to be a problem after the Database server comes back online.  Is there a way to prevent this in the future.  Often our servers are updated late at night so It is inconvenient to have to do a IIS restart.

Thanks in advance for your help

it's a known bug in the microsoft data application help dll (that DNN uses for all database access) - for some reason it caches the connection even if the connection was an invalid one. Forcing an application domain restart resolves it, the easiest way being an IISRESET (or editing web.config, adding a space, saving, then removing the space and re-saving will do so). I've never used it, but http://dnndbmon.codeplex.com/ might be worth looking into
