I have setup a site, and we are close to release to discover that the folder permissions you can assign via file management are not being respected by the site.

Even a deny all users allows the person to download the file if they know the url.

I can deny it at a file system level, but this then breaks file management as it throws and error when it tries to read the folder post upload.

Any advice would be appreciated

 Regards

David Wilkins

David,
any URL for a file stored in the IIS website with a registered MIME type other than asp* (and a few other extensions) get handled by IIS and is delivered by IIS without passing the query to DNN, this is by design. if you want to limit access to documents, use a folder of type "secure folder (file system)", this will rename the file, so that it can only be downloaded via DNN, using the LinkClick.aspx handler.

Sebastian,
Thanks, just curious then to know why there is a Permissions tab at all on a "standard folder" seems to me that if they are not going to apply the permissions should be there, or am I missing something?

DNN read permission is used e.g. in modules displaying a list of files - in this case it would hide the folders w/o permission.
Same with documents module, which lists selected documents - the module does fisplay only files in permitted folders.
since browsing files is turned off by default, users need to know the URL to download files directly - as only files with links will be included in Google and other search engines.

I reviewed the stored procedure being used to retrieve Folder permissions and it obviously contained a bug.
