My site SMTP email seems to work fine...  When I "Test SMTP Settings" - email is sent and I receive the notification in my email client.  THe mail server seems to be working.  I also tested the forum and other modules that use email and it works.

However I needed to send an email to my membership via "roles" - so I thought I'd try the Newsletters module... for a test I sent a message using "Additional Emails"... the module reports:

Bulk mail sent (asynchronous mode). Please check confirmation email for result.

The notification email says "There is a problem with the configuration of your SMTP Server. Mail was not sent."  - and I did not receive the email from the Newsletters module.

I went to Host Settings > Logs and here is an example item:

2015-10-20 11:35:45,939 [dodder][Thread:19][ERROR] DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.Exceptions - System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: SMTP authentication is required.

My host email account is admin@domain.com - its the superuser address - which is what I'm using when trying to get this to work - and it is in the host settings as well.

Ideas?

working site email is less usual than working host smtp.
However, for DNN 7.4.2, there is a change, using now host email address from Host Settings as Sender.
Which DNN version are you using?

Good day Sebastian,

I'm using 07.01.00 (2676).  (I've not updated because I'm using the old forum module and I understood that it was only tested with that version.  I understand this site still uses that module.. but you guys have a group of DNN experts to deal with any issues!  LOL!  I don't.)

If this is (was) a bug, I'm hoping the "fix" is in a specific component that can be manually changed...

I'd prefer that that this a configuration issue... maybe with the SMTP server... but I need to know what has to be done so I can go to the Arvixe support guys and ask them to make changes.... I don't have access to this.

Thanks for your stead-fast support Sebeastian...

I remember a couple of issues with site specific SMTP accounts, which was introduced in 7.x, but if I understand correctly, you are using host SMTP configuration.
It looks like Newsletter does not properly call SendMail to use secure connection, I haven't had a look at the code for quite some while, it might be a bug, not passing the "secure" bit properly. Unfortunately, the only solutions are a core fix or using a 3rd party module/service, sorry.

Sebastian Leupold
