New Community Website

My production DNN site is currently running on a dedicated Windows server. From time to time, I need to upgrade DNN, upgrade template or make changes to the website.

However, I am very afraid to do all the ugprades and changes to production website (even after database and files backed up). So I am thinking of creating another site on the same IIS and call it "Dev Site". This "Dev Site" will be a cloned (database, files) of the current production site. Then do my upgrades/changes on this "Dev Site". Once everything is running great. Then from IIS I can change the production domain to this "Dev Site"

Is that the best way to achieve this? How do you do it?

That is one way to do it.

I usually go that way if a client can live with a content freeze. They can test the dev (staging) site at will and we swap it when they are happy.
When clients cannot live with a content freeze, I usually do the same but when they are happy, instead of swapping I just take a backup and repeat the upgrade on the live site at night.
