Hi I would like to know how to create a new parent portal. I am programming on my local box and can't figure out how to  create a working parent portal.  I have the default portal set up at localhost/dotnetnuke.  Do I have to run a brand new installation to create a new parent portal?  I tried going through the portal wizard and selecting parent portal (from the radio button) and pointing the portal alias to a new virtual directory that I created in IIS.  I was hoping that dnn would create all the necessary files in the new virtual directory I set up but it didn't.  I just get an error when I try to visit the url. I am a dnn newbie and can't find any info that explains how to do this.  I can't find any helpful info in the 'professional dotnetnuke 4' book either. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, may be I just missunderstood the parent/child relationship but if you have two completely unrelated sites aren't you supposed to create a brand new parent portal?  You are only supposed to create child portals if the site is somehow related to your parent site, correct?  If someone could shed some light on what an appropriate situation would be to justify creating a new parent portal instead of a child portal it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

i had the same issue, but i finaly got it. run the pertal wizard and give the site the alise you want to use (www.whatever.com) use the default portal id and number. once that is done go into iss and create a new web site with read and ex, perm. right click the properties and go to home dir. point it to the same dir. that dot net nuke is installed to. click on the asp.net tab and change it to 2.0. add any alise you need to but they must match the portal alise (you can add additional one in dnn. thats it. hope it helps

Hi

No matter what I did I could not get DNN to create a Partent via the Portal Setup. However when I tried the Child Portal there were no problems.

ie.

domainA.com
and
domainA.com/domainB

I then tried to retro fit a Partent Portal (fully formed URL) and HTTP Alias in the site settings on top of the Child Portal. But no luck.

domainA.com/domainB
domainB.com

My Parent Portal (the new one) has the same IIS web site parameters as the original DNN Parent instalation (with the new host header value of course). Also ASP.net 2 is installed. Removing the Childs Portal HTTP Alias does not change anything.

The error I get

The connection has timed out

----------------
The server at members.domain.com is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
----------------

Any thoughts would be appreciated..

Matt
