Hi, Just need some pointers. Installed latest version on DNN 4 with SQL 2005 and no problem putting up some content on live server. However, the homepage takes between 30 and 50 seconds to load, whereas other pages load within few seconds. The homepage has few images (optimised) and a standard banner, so nothing more than a typical homepage, and I am using 128K line. I expect load time of less than 5 seconds for homepage.

I have tried HTTP Compression and cleared logs files. This has not fixed the problem. Does anyone have this probem of first page loading slowly? Is there known issues here? Please help.

If you load the page the first time .net will compile some stuff and it may take a while (skins etc.)
This happens also if you restart the server, as you can experience on a "server" on your workstation.
Here is a thread with some more info

This is more of an ASP.NET 2.0 than a DNN problem. Did you notice that after you load the homepage once, that it loads quite quickly afterwards?

If so, this is caused by ASP.NET recompiliing DotNetNuke after a change to web.config, a folder change, a period of inactivity or a recycle due to some other condition. This can also be caused by your homepage referencing external websites for information - it has to wait until the data is received.

Thanks for reply. Yes, you are right, the first time it loads, it take a long time, but subsequent pages load faster. So your proposition that ASP.NET is recompiling something sounds credible.

However, my homepage does not make reference to any external resource, and I have not made any changes to web.config or added any new content. So I am a bit puzzled that first page is still taking a long time. Surely ASP.NET does not recompile everytime page is loaded, if there is no change? Is there anything I can do to see what is going on? My customer is screaming!

Login to your site as admin or host and select admin|log viewer. Here you can see everything that is happening behind the scenes, and if you notice alot of application startup and/or application shut downs then you will have to look deeper into IIS to determine why this is happening. Note that there are many other events such as changing web.config, or deleting a folder that can cause your web application to restart. The log viewer is full of info about your site.

There are products available to ping your site to keep it alive, but I would prefer to know why is was happening before using this type of fix.
