Hello everyone.  I am looking for some ideas/suggestions on a site concept I am working on.  It is sort of a social network (ala MySpace) but more for the B2C space.  Here are some of the requirements:

  • I want to have an area (not sure if it is a page or a child portal) where a small company can have information about themselves - typical stuff like name, address, services offered, photos...
  • The small company space should have friendly URLs so that they can be easily found on the net.  The pages should also be found by search engines (Google, etc.).
  • I *may* want to allow the small companies to update their own space.
  • Potential customers should be able to come to the site and browse (like the browse feature on MySpace) to find these small companies via key attributes: city, state, zip, business type, rating, etc.  They can select from the filtered list, then view the small company space.
  • Customers can also rate the services they received and make recommendations to other customers (note the rating above).

Any thoughts on design ideas or modules that I can pull together to make this happen?  Should I use pages or child portals?  Your ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance,

- Ron.

After doing some research and some experimenting, I realize that I want the small company spaces to be pages and not child portals.  However, I want the pages to have simple friendly URLs - an example would be www.site.com/vendorspace.  This works great with child portals, but how can I get this same functionality using the URLRewriter?  This is important because the small companies will use this address on other materials...

If I have a bunch of these pages (say a few hundred), any suggestions on how site visitors can easily find the pages?  How can someone filter through the long list of pages?  Is there a page indexer that can key off of information on a page?

Thanks,

- Ron.

Check out the URL rewriting code that Scott M has posted over at www.ventrian.com I think it'll allow you to do what you want fairly easily.
