Hi:

I wanted to know what steps I need to take to allow members to remain logged in permanently (or long-term) into a DNN site, so they don't have to log in on each visit.

Any help in this regard would be much appreciated, I have tried many of the options but it doesn't seem to work.

It depends on the version of asp.net being used. If you're using asp.net 1.1 (i.e. with dnn 3.3.5) then simply checking the 'remember me' checkbox will set a persistent cookie with a 50 year expiration. In asp.net (dnn 4.x) this is different - i blogged about this @ http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/BlogsDotNetNuke/tabid/825/EntryID/233/Default.aspx

I added code to 4.3.5 to work around this asp.net limitation. If you're running 4.3.5 you can set PersistentCookieTimeout in the web.config to your desired value.

I just tried cathal's recommendation and it works fine so far.  Based on my understanding if I want the user "Remember Me" to function for 45 days I would us the value 64800  (60 min X 24 hour X 45 days).  Is this correct?

I am trying to use this technique on child portals and it doesn't seem to be working if the Main and the Child Portals have different login names.

Does the remember only work for the Portal and all of it's children?  Like 1 cookie for the entire complex?

Thanks,

Mike

yes, that's correct. FYI, i'm working on an enhancement to seperate the temporary and permanent cookie timeouts, i don't think I have the time to finish it for 4.4, but it should make the release after that.
