I know this doesn’t help, but I too am having problems using the import function.  I copied the XML export files from one portal and pasted it into another one but when I select import the dropdown in the new portal is blank.  I have a lot of data in those XML files and it would be a pain to have to reenter it again.  Any ideas?

I figured out an effective way to import data, notice I didn’t say efficient.

  • Export all of the data from your source site.
  • Create blank versions of the modules that you wish to fill with data.
  • Export the blank modules
  • If the destination modules are the same name as the source, then simply copy the XML files within /Portals/  of your source into the /Portals/ of your destination (replacing the files as you go)
  • If the two modules are named differently, either rename the source to match the destination or open each in notepad and copy the data from one to the other and save.
  • Either way, go back to the destination and select import.  Import the corresponding file and it should populate for you.
  • Essentially you’re tricking DNN into thinking it’s importing the file it just exported, but you’ve slipped the data in on it.

This worked great!  I am a super new noob, and I didn’t quite understand the instructions (but they gave me enough clues to figure it out.)

Here’s my advice to the super-new:

Go to your new site and create a blank version of the module\

Go to your old site and copy the title of the module.
Give the module on the new site the exact same name as the old module. (You can change it later.)

Export the content of the new module. Then delete the file from the file manager.

Export the content of the old module. Go to the file manager, save it, then upload it to the file manager on the new site.

(Be sure the file names of each file are exactly the same.  This is the whole point of the exercise.)

Now, import content for the new module.  The file name should appear in the selection box.

Voila!  Thanks EScout 209!
