1) Where can I find an explanation of the wildcards used in the Friendly SiteURLs.config file?

Specifically: "(\d+)" and "tabID=$1" plus any others that are available.

2) In the Friendly URL documentation, the pdf file, I see instances of a message: "Error! Objects cannot be created from editing field codes". Is the distributed pdf corrupt and should it be fixed?

3) Would appreciate recommendations on third party Friendly URL Rewriter modules from anyone with satisfactory experience with them.

Thanks very much.

Those are regular expressions. for an explanation of what you can do with them check out http://www.regexbuddy.com/

The (\d+) means "look for a digit and continue to match digits until there aren't any more, then the parens tell it to capture that whole number into a group (it captured the TabId).

The $1 is a backreference to the first group captured.  So it is grabbing the tabid out of the friendly Url and puting it back into a querystring.
