The password is now 7 digits long but where/how can I bring that back to 4 or 5 digits

Open your web.config file - I usually open it in notepad, do a CTRL F and look for the word 'password' and then follow the text across the line until I see 7 - and change it there.

Resave and refresh the page. BTW - before doing ANYTHING to your web.config file -do a copy of it first.
