I appreciate your help. I will build the site map and submit it that way, create some links from a few other sites and stay away from the googld submit button.

Thanks Again

Another good thing to do is to submit your site to http://DMOZ.org, this is a free internet index, used by many search engines as a starting point to indexing "the internet". If your site is in there, it will be visited by a lot of search bots....

Erik,

I keep trying to submit to dmoz.org but their site is down for submission.  They have no date when it will be back up.  I've tried for 1 month now.  Also, here is the link that the google experts told me NOT to re-submit or use auto-submission features for Google.  Some good advice in here on indexing...

If anyone can tell me how to get into DMOZ I would appreciate it. After 3 tries I still am not in it.

I am in MSN and Yahoo with the #1 result for my keywords (canada web content management), and am also in Google, but nowhere near the top.  MSN and Yahoo seem to rank sites based on how well your sites performs for its keywords.  Google is a popularity contest.  Without backlinks you'll never rank well.  A very tough nut to crack.

So for anyone wondering if DNN can rank well in search engines - I am #1 in 2 of the top 4 engines for my keywords.  All without paying for ads, or paying for links anywhere.  In my blog I offer some very simple SEO tips for DNN which are ignored by every DNN skin I've ever seen.  I did exactly what I outlined, along with a couple of other things.  #1 rankings cannot be wrong.

DMOZ is definitely good to be in for Google. If your keywords match the category in DMOZ it adds a lot of weight to your score.

To get in takes a while since it is human edited, but if you haven't been added after a couple months it shouldn't hurt to try again.

And I also agree that DNN can be indexed with little problem.  Just do a google search on the term DotNetNuke and see how many pages of dotnetnuke sites you get.

I still have problems in getting Googlebot to index my DNN site pages, although I've selected the Friendly URLs option (Host Settings). I recently provided a sitemap to Googlebot through Google Webmaster Tools, but it failed to find every page listed in the sitemap.xml file, giving a 404 Not Found error for each of them. Yet the URLs were all functional, at least when viewing them in IE, for example:

hxxp://www.cargomera.com/dnn/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx

Why isn't the bot able to follow these links, and what should be done? I think I read somewhere that solpart menu automatically feeds a non-JavaScript version to the bot, so maybe it crawls them after all?

My 2 cents is that Google sitemaps get you very far, very fast, and MSN and Yahoo are looking to utilize the same type of process/procedure for spidering as well (yay).

For example, I took on a site project recently that was nowhere in the listings, and 8 days after launch had them #1 for their core keywords (out of 1.6MM listings). This wasn't done in an underhanded or ridiculous way with bloated META or whatever, but with a good site and a solid sitemap. Even a yaer after launch, they remain at the top of their core keywords.

I only say this to point out that #1 - I've never used the "submit site to google" thing, and #2 - a site that is built mindfull of proper SEO, with good content, page names, page titles and META, topped off with a proper site map, will get you pretty far in a short period of time.
