And bingo!.. that enabled me to pull out an error message for this problem:

Method: System.Web.HttpResponse.AppendHeader
StackTrace:
Message: System.Exception: Unhandled Error: ---> System.Web.HttpException: Server cannot append header after HTTP headers have been sent. at System.Web.HttpResponse.AppendHeader(String name, String value) at DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Compression.CompressingFilter.WriteHeaders() at DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Compression.GZipFilter.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at System.Web.HttpWriter.Filter(Boolean finalFiltering) at System.Web.HttpResponse.Flush(Boolean finalFlush) at System.Web.HttpResponse.Flush() at DotNetNuke.Common.Utilities.FileSystemUtils.DownloadFile(Int32 PortalId, Int32 FileId, Boolean ClientCache, Boolean ForceDownload) at DotNetNuke.Services.FileSystem.FileServerHandler.ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) at System.Web.HttpApplication.CallHandlerExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() at System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

There must surely be a clue in that?

I had a similar issue, to workaround i disabled Compression comes up with 4.4.0 package. To disable http compression module just remove the following line from web.config.

<add name="Compression" type="DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Compression.HttpModule, DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Compression"/>

Before doing this i suggest backing up current web.config file

I've done this in the host settings menu under Performance. There's a drop-down list of options for compression... or am I missing something by doing it that way?

I've got it disabled until this can be sorted out. Hopefully 4.4.1 will be along soon.... might fix it.

ok I think I've found it. I should have guessed this earlier seeing as it's not first time it got me into trouble. I have an http module that I bought off Snowcovered that has its own line in the <httpModules> section. I've now commented it out and voila, the sub-portals have come to life.

Now I'm going to have to disable it all over again because it has only brought up yet another problem.. the bullet images in the Core Links module aren't showing.. just red X's... and I haven't got the whitespace filter on.

Regards,
Rob
