Hi all,

I've upgraded to 4.40 and among one or two other issues, I am unable to get compression happening. When I enable either of the compression methods, all of the sub-portals in my DNN instance vanish. Sometimes the browser just shows a blank white page, other times it fails to find anything.

I'm hosted on a Webhost4life VPS account and have sent them a ticket as well to see if they know what to do.

Any assistance is appreciated,
Rob

My webhost has offered to enable IIS http compression on the server for me.

Before I respond to them, can someone who knows please tell me if this is the correct step to take?

And if it is, then do I enable Gzip or the other compression and if the latter, what level?

Thanks for any help with this.

Rob

If you use IIS compression you can disable the compression built into DNN, there is no reason to do both.  I am surprised that webhost4life has offered to turn on IIS compression for you since it takes up quite a bit of server resources.

Thanks for the reply.

I take it to mean that IIS compression is a third option on top of the two varieties offered in DNN 4.40? hmm... this gets ever more confusing.

Webhost4life will have offered to enable it because I have a VPS account with dedicated resources.. and probably because they didn't know what else to tell me when I asked about compression in DNN.

I'll tell them not to enable it as I'd prefer to get the built-in DNN version working properly if possible.. unless IIS compression is a preferable technology? I had imagined, from reading all the posts about compression, that one needs to have good control over what it compresses.

So.. has anyone got a 4.40 site with subportals working with compression turned on?

Because my host portal does work with it turned on, I assume it must be something in the way DNN or the server handles extra domains for sub-portals...?

I can't even tell if this is a bug or not or whether I should post it in Gemini.

Thanks for any further advice.

Rob

I've got something else to add to this:

I can access all my subportals if I browse to them using http://hostportal/subportal

... but I cannot browse to them using their actual domain names.

So turning on compression doesn't stop the subportals running, it just stops their respective domains working..??
