I am also having some frustrating problems with DNN in a web farm environment. I'm glad you are still hanging in there, maybe we can figure it out.

This last error of yours is not one I have seen but I'm guessing it's a problem with replication? How are you handling the file cache? thru db or files???

This last error has seemingly gone away, but honestly I can't remember what I did.

I'm using database caching, since I am not using the same directory structure for each app server.  I am using file replication (or syncronization to be more accurate) to keep them consistent.

So far, this is the only setup I can get working.  I've not been able to get it all figured out for having a share host the app files in .Net 2.0.

It's my recommendation to install everything locally and syncronize files between each server using the software I suggested in a previous post.

penra, if you happen to get it working using a shared directory on a different server, I'd love to know the steps.  They should be included in the Web Farm Support documentation.

Is anyone aware that the Preview function in the forum does not work in IE7? I can preview but then I can never update I can only cancel and lose my post.

It is working for me but I am getting some errors. I've decided to set up another site on the same server with all files local, see if in fact my errors are related to the UNC share or what. Right now I am plagued by an error that appears to be from a permission problem.

Unable to get the private bytes memory limit for the W3WP process. The ASP.NET cache will be unable to limit its memory use, which may lead to a process restart. Error: 0x80070005

My site is not live yet, but I know that the current state will not be acceptable for production. The site blows up every few days and requires iisreset on a regular basis (and that's just with a few users on it!). Frustrating that more energy is not directed to making DNN a resource wise, scalable enterprise tool. I wish I knew how the hosters are managing to provide DNN. They must use DFS or UNC shares...

I don't see a way to attach my document here but I have noted all of my steps for set up and would be glad to share with the documentation team.

Penra ~ We actually DO spend a great deal of energy on "making DNN a resource wise, scalable enterprise tool"... but we are constrained by some of the interesting aspects of .Net and the MS server environment.  Both very powerful and highly configurable, but that sometimes means we can't anticipate the impacts of all the configuration options... but I digress.

I would be happy to route your document to others who might be interested. Please feel free to reach me at the email address in my profile (click my name to the left).

Cheers

I may be a little out of date on terminology...  but ASP.NET 2.0 has something like "application groups" that are configured with a security account that ASP.NET code executes as.  This account is not the same as the account configured for anonymous access on a web page.

I was having security problems at one point and I set up a new application group with a brand new account that i created...  i assigned the same account as the anonymous user account for the site - gave it permissions to the windows temp directory, and to the dnn install directory, and to the SQL Server database...

This worked well but the account was a domain account - and every now and then the domain controller would go unavailable - or latency between the controller and the web server would be so bad that authentication woudl timeout - i ended up needing to make two local accounts - one on each server - with the same username and same password.
