ASP.Dot first needs to jit-compile websites and caches this data, until the site is not used for some time (usually 20 min), when the cache is cleared. you can aviod this by constantly hitting your site, e.g. every 15 mins (what will keep the memory used as well), e.g. using services like free www.hosttracker.com

While the method Sebastian suggested will work, most hosts frown on that method.  Instead you can remove modules that you are not using and delete providers you are not using as well.  Every assembly in your application \bin directory must be loaded on startup which consumes time and memory.  Also, make sure you are running the latest 4.4 release which includes a ton of performance enhancements.  I will aslo see about getting Shaun to blog about another performance enhancement which we did not include in 4.4 because it is an advanced technique that takes some extra manual steps during upgrades and therefore was not really workable for standard DNN installs.

Even with 4.4.0 and minimum modules the first hit JIT compile is very slow.

The hosts may frown on it (because the number of sites they can cram on a server will be lower), but to get rid of that first hit slowness you really need to keep the site alive.
