This might have been mentioned in some degree before, but I was browsing around and run across this article:

http://dotnetslackers.com/articles/dotnetnuke/ReverseEngineeringDotNetNukeSkin.aspx

My thoughts were, is this good or bad.  It basically teaches people who do not have the skill how to hack and pirate DNN skins that you do not have access to the sources (such as the example of the DotNetNuke.com site skin, although the article warns against it).  Most skin developers would already have this knowledge, but the average DNN user may not.

This all brought up another thought, is commercial skin market for DNN able to generate revenue to justify the effort with the possibility of priracy, or does a person/company have to target customized skins for revenue?

Any thoughts?

This was actually debated here a while back, shortly after the article was published and it had mixed reviews.

My thoughts on the matter are this.

1.  They are simply instructing users on how to view and decouple the content  from the display
2.  This information is readily available and CANNOT be protected, the browser must render the content and link the files so there is no way around it.

I guess the fact of the matter is that it could be  a great way to learn how others have accomplished specific looks.  Does it present a risk of piracy?  No, I don't think it really introduces any new risks, individuals can do this with ANY web browsers and those that use FireFox with the web developer toolbar can view a lot of the formatting information without even viewing the source (Show tables, and other options).

SO I guess the short response is in my opinion it is NOT a bad thing, it might actually spark some new creativity.

I clicked throught to your free skins page - there are none listed? Is this a new site and will there be free skins soon?

Thanks,

Monica,

Yes it is a fairly new site and I am having difficulties getting individuals to submit fee skins for download directly from the site.

I do know that xd.com.au has free skins, that is actually where I got the base skin that I use for both of my main DotNetNuke portals.
