Hi all,

I am newbies in DDN skinning. Just want to check out few things:

1.  I know that we need 3 files here: Skins.xml, Skins.css and Skin.html. How does skins.xml works?

2. I have created few pages in DNN - Home, Services and About Me. I created my own menu. How do i link all these pages to the my menu or do i need to use the solpartmenu?  My menu is some like this:

<div class="bar">
 <ul>
 <li><a href="">Home </a></li>
 <li><a href="">Services </a></li>
 <li><a href="">About Me </a></li>
 </ul>
</div>

Thanks folks

ad 1. please refer to the skinning guide, that is available from the project documentation page here on dotnetnuke.com. for creating the skin.xml file, there is also a nice tool available at http://skinobjects.purplebox.be/

As for your menu, you can look at the links via the solpart menu if you want, and then hard code them....but I do not recommend that as you then have specifically tied your skin into your site structure.

You might have a look at Snapsis' CSS NavMenu.  It is a lightweight menu that would allow you to get all of your desired functionality. http://www.snapsis.com/tabid/589/ProductID/13/DotNetNuke-CSS-SEO-Menu.aspx I have just evaulated the module and I have to say it is incredibly impressive.

Like Leupold said, most of this is covered in the skinning document, but some quick answers are:

1) Skin.xml tells DNN how to setup the tokens you insert in your HTML file, such as [MENU], [LINKS], etc. This way, when you upload the .ZIP file, it replaces the tokens with ASP code like the following:

<dnn:MENU runat="server" id="dnnMENU" display="vertical" />
<dnn:LINKS runat="server" id="dnnLINKS" Separator=" &#8226; " Level="Same" CssClass="footerlinks" />

2) It is strongly reccomended you use SolPart or another navigation control like Snapsis' CSS Menu since DNN is a dynamic framework and the DNN engine handles page names / descriptions / keywords / etc.

If you have to have a menu which is hard coded to specific pages because it doesn't follow a structure used by the site or any of the DNN menus, use a Links module instead.  At least the "menu" links are still outside of the code and you can easily change them from the admin interface.
