I have a request from a client who has a HORIZONTAL MENU that they would like to be able to setup so that each vertical dropdown can be configured with its own background color.

Something like

MENU1 - MENU2 - MENU3

RED         BLUE       GREEN
RED         BLUE       GREEN
RED         BLUE       GREEN

Anyone got any thoughts on how to handle this sort of thing

Cheers

Westa

Yes, but you will have to replace the "menu" module, which ever you're using, with some ul(s) and li(s) which you will be able to style.

The easiest way would be to copy from the source (view/page source) )the code which the menu generates now and add to each list the color you like to,

then paste that code instead of the "menu" at the default aspx file.

The only minus: You will have to add more pages manually.

not a great answer - anyone have any better idea on how to make the menu dropdowns different colors.

You most likely will need to move away from the built in SolPartMenu.  I don't believe, somebody feel free to correct me, that you can achieve this with the SolPartMenu.  I think you can may be able to do it with the dnn:Nav menu, but it may still be difficult.  I have used the Inventua Side Menu and you can achieve this with either the side, or the top menu (I think top).  It won't be the easiest and you will need to be comfortable with CSS.  You can google it and get to the website for the menu.  I recently attended the Open Force conference and there were several menu's that were covered in one of the sessions.  The session had a great overview and covered the type of idea you are talking about.  The session was put on by Peter Schotman and was an excellent overview.  I would recommend you hunt a bit with google and see if his presenation has made it online yet, and you can check out the menu's he covered.

This is an extremely common issue.

You can do it in Solpart, BUT you need to implement a different instance of the menu for EACH tab, give it a separate "id=" AND use the "StartTabId=" property to instantiate each menu item.  THEN in the CSS you can style each item any way you want to and achieve this result.  It is long, and laborious, but can be done.   See the skinning documentation for it and there is a narrative from one who did it here:  Click Here

John Henning blogged about using the Nav menu to accomplish an image based menu system that could be used for this in his Blog.

You can also do it with the Snapsis CSSNavMenu from Snapsis.com

There are ways to do it, but the skins is then NOT "portable" without modifications to the elements and properties involved.  So, once you achieve it, it is a "one site" skin and must be modified for EACH specific site you want to use it on.  Good news is that isn't near as hard as learning to do it.
