Not necessarily for skin images, but just the stuff I want to include in Text/HTML modules, etc.  Can I create subfolders under Portals/x/ to organize other files? Not sure I just want to dump them in my Portals/x/ root.

Use the file manager and create whatever you wish.  Files can be uploaded and used in modules from anywhere you create the files.

You can! (and should).

When logged in as a portal admin, hover over the admin menu, then pull down to the file manager sub-menu to access the file manager.

The first row of the file manager shows "folders" and a text box to fill in for a folder name.  fill that in with "images" or something.  When I'm creating my own stuff, I usually use names like myImages or prefix any words I put in anywhere, with something unique especially if I don't know what the results are going to be.  IE maybe something else may use the folder named "images" so i'd make it "imgMyImages" or whatever.

Anyhow type your name and click add folder.  Remember though, it's not part of DNN specifically, but more .NET that will prevent large file uploads.  You can manage the portal file system however you want using the file manager, but if you plan to upload huge files there is some custom work you need to do I think in the web.config file if i"m not mistaken!
