Jeff,

The secret is that skins, like modules, are uploaded as a zip file with a particular set of folders and files inside it. When you're browsing your drive, simply select the zip that contains the skin. Note that sometimes a commercial skin package will have the zip of the skin inside it and will need to be extracted first. The zip you want to upload is the one that has a 'skins' and a 'containers' folder inside it.

Thanks for your reply. I think I've now actually figured it out. Unfortunately, I'm fighting a new demon now, the dreaded upgrade to 4.8.2 from 4.8.0. Let's just say it's not goin so well. Can't log in anymore. Thanks again with the info on the skins.

I guess you didn't copy the machine key then... from the old web.config to the new...

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I did copy the connection strings and the machineKey validationKey and the decryption key. I can tell it knows the password because it won't let me even complete the login step unless I type it in correctly. But when I do it just takes me back to the Home page like I never even signed in. Any clues? Thanks.
