When applying multiple skins to a single portal to have different layouts for different areas of the site, are there any performance ramifications that one should be worried about?  Currently we are in the process of migrating from another CMS product where we have approximately 30-50 templates (several variations of a similar template, with the location and number of panes differing between them).  Is the only way to accomplish multiple layouts with separate skins?  Would implementing 30-50 skin in a single portal instance effect performance of the portal?  If so what is a safe number of skins to implement without effecting performance?

Thanks.

Derek

The only performance hit you would take is the same your facing in your current CMS, which is the loading and processing of the CSS / skin the first time the user hits the new skin. From there a typical caching system kicks in. I would suggest you get and install the community version of Pageblaster. It creates static version of pages which tend to be more static, it optimizes your CSS and JS, and does a ton of other things to grab peak performance.

I have a site with 20 different skins and even without PageBlaster it runsn / workes fine. Pageblaster just helped my users that have a slow connection like dial-up enjoy my site a bit better.
