I'm extremely frustrated here!  I've gone through countless tutorials on DNNCreative, I'm staring at this book by WROX and everytime I go to upload a skin of my own, it totally bonks.  I throw one up from the tutes - no sweat!  I don't even know where to start.  What does "The server tag is not well formed" mean?  On a blog i see that there's a funky charater in some blog module, but I'm not using a blog!  What went wrong?  My HTML seems fine, the XML doc validates, the CSS looks good - what's the problem?  Any info/hint/clue would be very much appreciated.

How did you create your skin? It's likely that you have a funky pair of quotes in there causing the problem. Try opening up your HTML file in Notepad and see if you see the offending quotes in there.

Great isn't it -

Download the ascx code and look for these sorts of things...

A typical thing that will throw you out could be one of the following -

  • you copied and pasted something and it lost the > (closing tag)
  • You copied and pasted something and it doesn't have a space any more - like... <div id="TopRightPane" csslass="blue"runat="server"> (see there is no space between the " & runat)
  • You have accidently put two classes or two ID's into the <div id="TopRightPane" runat="server" id="blue">  (see ID is used twice)
  • You don't have a contentpane in there - at the very least you need a contentpane

When this situation occurs - there are two ways to approach it -

look at utilising ascx skinning and taking an existing file and making small modifications to it and seeing the behaviour there.

look at the default htm files that are packaged with the build - you know they work - take them and start looking at the code

That should help you get started - by the way - what version of dnn are you using.. if you are using dnn 5, forget the books and the tutorials.. they are not relevant at all for dnn 5 any more.

You could download one of the free skins I have on my site and take that apart too.

It doesn't have to be much wrong -  - try looking at your log viewer too - it might give you more detailed information.
