A client recently pointed out that when they copied legacy skin folders from their old DNN4 environment to their fancy new 5.0.0 installation, they received the following error:

Could Not Load Skin: /Portals/_default/Skins/YourSkinName/YourSkinFile.ascx, Error: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Skin'.

It seems that the first line of the skin's ASCX file(s) needs to be changed from:

<%@ Control language="vb" CodeBehind="~/admin/Skins/skin.vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Explicit="True" Inherits="DotNetNuke.Skin" %>

to this:

<%@ Control language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Explicit="True" Inherits="DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Skin" %>

I have no idea why this is, if this is something I should have realized a long time ago, or what any of this means, but thought I'd mention it in case anyone else encounters the same error when attempting to apply older skins.

Hmm, that ASCX skin must be from an older DNN version, not user which one..

I have followed the guidelines, as far as I can see, and get the error shown below:

Package Installation Report

See below for the results of the package installation

Error loading files from temporary folder - see below
StartJob Starting Installation
Info Starting Installation - Shadow-Skin
Info Starting Installation - Skin
Failure ExceptionSystem.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Services.Installer.Installers.SkinInstaller.Install()
Failure Installation Failed - Skin
Info Installation Failed - Shadow-Skin
Info Deleted temporary install folder
EndJob Installation Failed

Where is the temporary folder? Is this a permissions issue I wonder?

Declan

This was caused by me omitting to add <skinFiles> ... </skinFiles>

I had all the individual <skinFile> entries but omitted the <skinFiles>
