I made a custom skin based on a freebie a few months ago, and everything was working fine. I haven't made any changes to the skin in the past three months, but now when I go back to add a new page on my DNN site and try to add modules to the RightPane, the dropdown doesn't display it as an option. The other pages still have modules in the RightPane, and I can copy one of those pages to create a new page in which the modules are still in the RightPane. I even see <div id="dnn_RightPane" class="rightpane"... in the source code when the page is published.

Any ideas on what I can do to make it a drop-down option again for adding modules?

I did not...is it recommended to do a backup before restarting? Or is that not usually an issue?
