so im having a bit of an issue... i went and installed visual web developer so I could do the development and im getitng the website setup in MSVWD and im confused...

this is the guide ive been using:

http://www.installationwiki.org/Development_Environment_for_Skinning_DotNetNuke

i downloaded the starter kit for 4.9.0 ( the DNN version godaddy uses) and got it installed correctly in VWD ... now the steps that im going through in the above link look just like the ones i setup on godaddy... should i be doing the same thing over again?

does there need to be  a local DNN install as well as a remote install for me to develop in VWD?

im really hoping im making it harder than it needs to be ...

If you are not going change the core itself, I would go for the install version, which is good enough for skinning and easier to install IMO

 Timo,

thanks for the reply, Ive actually already installed the DNN on the server, right now im attempting to create skins for it, and i believe im getting caught up in the skin packaging process ( i think theres some XML that im missing bc i was coding in dreamweaver)

im @ the point now that i've got all the HTML goodness that ive placed into functional skins i've copied and begun to modify, hoever after modifying it they arent accepted as working skins ( i THINK bc of the mentioned XML manifests)

which brings me to the present where ive just installed MSVWD and im trying to figure out how to get it to interface w my current godaddy DNN (4.9.0) install

My main task right now is getting the skin to work (obviously) with the least ammount extra BS (MSVWD install is more than whats was necessary IMO)

out of curiosity what do you develop in?

You need an XML file to be able to set the attributes for the tokens you add to the skin.

These tokens are objects that are replaced by dynamic content.

[CONTENTPANE] will generate a box to add modules to from the control panel of DNN

[LOGIN] will generate a login link atc.

Please read the skinning documentation (in the documentation package on the downloads page)

Not all the skin objects are up to date, but for DNN 4 the basics have not changed.

I do most of my skins in VS2008 and Notepad++ and I generally create ASCX skins (95% of my skinning is custom skinning)

I do have Dreamweaver installed, but to be honest I never use it...
