when i place a module in the top pane, i get, literally 2" of white space between the top of my module (ANY module) and the date field line. and again, if i put a module in the content pane, i get a 2" white space between this module and the one in the top pane. where is this controlled?

Hi James,
        This must be cause of HTML of container you are using, if this is happening with all the modules.
        If this is happenig with a particular module the look at the view control HTML of that module.

Check your module container if it contains specific css class or new line.
If you use firefox you can view the html source code using Firebug

    padding-top: 1px;
}
.leftpane {
    width: 175px;
    background-color: transparent;
    padding-left: 6px;
    padding-right: 4px;
    padding-top: 6px;
}
.contentpane {
    width: 100%;
    background-color: transparent;
    padding-left: 6px;
    padding-right: 4px;
    padding-top: 1px;
}
.rightpane {
    width: 175px;
    background-color: transparent;
